Miles Davis was a forerunner of cool jazz and he was a stylist off stage as much as he was when playing, often posing for fashion photography. He instantly came to mind when I was researching Lautrec's work and based my painting on Lautrec's lithographs of the singer/composer Bruant who owned a cabaret where Lautrec showed his work. My painting is of a print and, as such, I found that the use of flat colour to depict a three dimensional object (as in Davis's body) engages the viewer' into the painting to draw a distinction between pattern and form.
